    Thumbs down Hardy PPC ISO

    Hi,

just wonder if there will be a Hardy 8.04 PPC release soon. Can't find an ISO here
and the latest daily build is from the 21st, before the official release.

Also does anyone know about a Hardy PPC DVD image?

    Thanks in advance.

Xubuntu I don't know about, but the Hardy PPC port for the Gnome version is up.

    Re: Hardy PPC ISO

That RC is what I'm running here - although it upgraded itself to the latest Hardy-release, as verified by

    Code:
    cat /etc/lsb-release
It is disturbing to see that the xubuntu release iso isn't available in the torrents either. Guess that for now the best bet is to start with the RC from the 21st. Maybe they are still preparing a release.

However, one can do an Ubuntu install, and then install xubuntu-desktop and switch to it at the next session logon. If ubuntu-desktop goes away for ppc, I suppose we could roll our own by just using xfce4.. time will tell...

There is also the possibility of instlling the server edition, and again adding gdm and xubuntu-desktop I suppose.

I'll have to keep an eye on this, as I LOVE Xubuntu on my ppc Mac. Perhaps they are working on something, as the note about ppc ports in the sources.list is still being shown on the Xubuntu news page:
    http://www.xubuntu.com/news/hardy/ports

Since many ppc macs may not have a lot of memory to begin with, Xubuntu and PPC seem like the perfect match.

    Re: Hardy PPC ISO

My problem is that my INet connection is more than rubbish where I live now. I like to ask a friend to download the ISO and send a DVD to me. An upgrade to Hardy is more than 1.3 GB right now and that's not an option for me. Even with a Xubuntu CD the amount of packages I have to download will be quite big, not to think about an Ubuntu CD. The best would really be a DVD so that I can (re)install without any hassle anytime.

While there is no desperate need for me to upgrade I'm quite happy to wait for a Xubuntu ISO, but I would like to know that there will be one!

I may ask this question on IRC.

Totally agree with you stream303, Xubuntu and my iBook G4 are the perfect match. I'm totally happy with that combination.

    Re: Hardy PPC ISO

I'm not sure if an Xubuntu ppc iso / torrent is going to show up - I may be wrong, but in any case finding a dvd is even more problematic.

Just to prove that while I love Ubuntu and the users, I'm no cheerleader.

Perhaps Fedora or OpenSuse PPC dvd's might fit the bill:

    http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora

    http://software.opensuse.org/

I guess in both there might be a way after installation of the default desktops, to load XFCE4, which is what Xubuntu is based on, and use that as your default desktop, and trim the fat afterwards.

I think both are nearing a new release as well...

    Re: Hardy PPC ISO

Well, think I will go back to Debian unstable, where I was 10 months ago and problems with OpenOffice made me go to Xubuntu. Looks like there done some work with OpenOffice and I'm hopeful that they won't drop PPC soon.

I liked Xubuntu, specially the easy way to configure it (WLAN) but I'm not willing to buy a new laptop for that reason, love my iBook too much.

    Cheers

No problem - Debian rocks along with Ubuntu. I would think that with Debian they won't monkey-around with OO, so that is a good thing imnsho...

I'm too busy to run Sid, although I suspect I will dual-boot it very soon.

Yes- the 21st April may be your best bet, but by then, Hardy Heron was in a thing called Feature Freeze, where it was effectively a release anyway. Remember- it was released 3 days later.
