ASUS N51 bug doesn't let me install 12.04: is this a crazy idea?
As some of you might know, there is this bug that affects users of ASUS N51 series laptops. I'm currently suffering from it, which means I'm stuck with Ubuntu 10.04, since a more recent upgrade would update the kernel as well and leave the installation unusable.
I learnt that the hard way: I currently have an unusable Xubuntu 12.04 installed on my ASUS from the CD.
So, I was thinking. What if I go back to 10.04, which works just fine, upgrade it to 12.04 from the update manager and then, in the GRUB, I choose the Ubuntu version with the oldest kernel? Is that possible? Will that work?
Thanks in advance (and excuse my English! It's not good for technical stuff)

Alternatively, could I do this on Debian? Intalling the stable release (which works just fine for me), changing the repos to testing and then booting from the old kernel in the GRUB?
