Kobo ereader install ; Ubuntu 12.04

Hi,

I lately bought a Kobo eReader which need a application called kobo dekstop installed. There only is an unofficial version for ubuntu 32bit (which still is distributed by kobo) but I am however running ubuntu 12.04 64 bit.

I followed the very helpful guide at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...22&postcount=9 on how to install the dekstop app.

But now, if try to run Kobo in the terminal, I get the following error:

ecchlesius@ecchlesius-Vostro-V131:~$ Kobo
/usr/local/Kobo/Kobo: error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so.44: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Do you guys know how to solve that issue?

Try this in the terminal

sudo apt-get install libicu48
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.48 /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.44

Well, at least the error changed

/usr/local/Kobo/Kobo: error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so.44: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

I can't really help you with the "official" Kobo application but my wife also has a Kobo ereader and we find that the Calibre library management application works very well with the device.

It is in the repos but the developer recommends that you install directly from the Calibre website to ensure you have the latest version.

Wait, that was my bad.

sudo rm /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.44
sudo apt-get remove libicu48
getlibs -p libicu48
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.48 /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.44

Im not sure if getlibs installs in lib32 or just lib.

I think its in /usr/lib, not /usr/lib32, so Ill just leave it at that.

But yes, as Zill said, Calibre is a good option for ebook readers.

I can not say, wheter the error is still here, but (I really don't want to be picky,but ...) don't you think it would have been worth mentioning that

sudo apt-get remove libicu48

will delete half of all my applications I ever had?

Thanks, but for some reason ubuntu did not let me login in anymore and i could not fix it via the root shell, so I already made a clean new install.
I had everything backed up so there was at least no data loss, but it seems to me that this way of installing the kobo is a dead end, or at least for the OS.

But thanks anyway!

Tried the latest Kobo -reader software and gave me the same 64bit error (using 64bit Xubuntu, 12.04).
I downloaded and installed this:
http://pkgs.org/ubuntu-11.10/ubuntu-....deb/download/
(it installed to /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.44 and /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.44.2) and now the Kobo works!

Hi Sandyd,
I used your commands but I ended up losing a lot of my installed applications (programs, e.g. eclipse, libre office etc).
If you know of quick way restored them (I mean without installing them one by one), I would appreciate big time.
