I have a Dell desktop which formerly had Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop Edition x64 installed, and it worked great. I should note that this machine dual-boots, it has a separate hard disk with Windows 7 on it, I doubt that is relevant.
Using the normal GUI helper, I told it to upgrade to 12.04. After it was done downloading packages and installing them, it said "You must reboot to finalize the process" or something to that effect. I said "OK", and it tried to shut down. It did not shut down fully, it froze at the screen where you see "ubuntu" and five dots under it. I waited a LONG time, but the dots had stopped moving. So then I power-cycled it and booted up.
Now, every time I boot up, it gets to the desktop, in the upper right I see the current time (which changes each minute) and my username (it logs me in automatically on boot), and in the launch bar along the left I see 10 empty boxes (the correct number) without application icons displaying. Icons on the desktop are there, but they are all generic white rectangles, not the right picture.
Any thoughts? Thank you.
