    old desktop, xp or ubuntu?

Have to use this old desktop for a while
    P4
    512mb DDR ram
    radeon 9550

    Currently using XP, pretty slow..

Thinking of doing Ubuntu with wubi, which version will run smoothest with this PC?
Can run kotor pretty well though, anyone know any good Ubuntu games btw?
    thanks

Also worried cuz ubunttu uses Firefox and from what I seen, ie 8 uses less ram then Firefox, so will I be ok?

I'm my experience I think you will struggle with such little RAM, as for firefox, although it's default their are other browsers avaiable if you wish to use them.

It's worth bearing in mind that XP is an antiquated OS, so comparing it with Ubuntu is apples and oranges.

XP is still supported, but it is mostly obsolete. I don't think Ubuntu/Unity would work well on this machine, but something like XFCE (xubuntu) or LXDE (lubuntu) should run great. You will get both a modern OS and good performance.

Lubuntu should run decently with that hardware.

My old Pentium 4 is running CrunchBang.
(But I have 1.5gb RAM and an Intel video card, so your mileage may vary.)

    512mb DDR ram
I would advise against Wubi with this amount of ram, or it will run as slow as you say XP is. Well almost anyway. If there's room on the disk consider installing on its own partition and both os's should run fine. Unity won't run probably. To address the slowness issue, remember to clean windows with something like CCleaner regularly and defrag, keep updates current and XP will just keep on turning--it's a very good system in my experience and worth the time to care for.

Adding another 512 stick of ram will do wonders for any OS. One stick is cheap, try ebay.

There are lighter versions of ubuntu, suggestions have already been given. You're going to enjoy playing with any ubuntu...

If you don't mind the 18-month life cycle, my vote goes to Lubuntu.

If you need the installation to last longer without any fuss/upgrades, you'd probably prefer Xubuntu.

Either one will be faster than XP, and more secure, and generally more fun.

I have an old computer very similar to that
    P4 1.6
    512 sdram
    And an old radion card

I installed Xubuntu on it worked well, though I found turning off compositor helped allot.

The only issue was that things like youtube lagged a bit when playing video.
That could be a combo of firefox and low ram though,

On the same computer I tried WattOS which is based on Ubuntu and it just flys
It comes with Midori Web browser I had no lag with Youtube maybe because I was using Midori...

Lubuntu or Crunchbang. I personally do not like Lubuntu because I have problems with LXDE before, but that might just be me. I have used Crunchbang and it's great as a lightweight distrobution. Gnome Classic could also be an option for desktop environments, but it might not be the fastest. If you want a lightweight qt desktop environment try out razor-qt. You could also try E17 which is also very lightweight DE. Bodhi Linux(http://bodhilinux.com/) has this and it is also available in the Ubuntu repo's.

    Also razor-qt:

My goodness, there's been a lot of extra large images posted the last three days. Scrolling back and forth isn't fun.
