    11.10 Troubles with ATI Catalyst™ driver

    Dear All!

    I run KUbuntu Oneiric Oscelot 11.10 64-bit
    Code:
    bender@vaio:~$ uname -r
    3.0.0-16-generic
    Today I was about to install proprietary driver for my video card
    Code:
    bender@vaio:~$ lspci
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc NI Whistler [AMD Radeon HD 6600M Series]
    Unfortunately I don't know what driver I had before, but how you can guess, I decided to reinstall it with proprietary driver from ATI. Previous driver I think was a driver "out of the box". Two main reasons why I did that decision:
    1) When I started to rotate 3D figures in Mathematica it crashed with SISGEV signal
    2) Video card temperature was too high....((

    Then I installed AMD Catalyst Proprietary Display Driver (11.11 Proprietary Linux x86 Driver; revision number 12.1; release date 1/25/2012)
    Code:
    bender@vaio:~$ chmod +x amd-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run
    bender@vaio:~$ sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run
    Then I choose -> Install Driver -> ... -> Automatic Installation.
    Installation was fine - i.e. it was no errors during the installation process.
    But after the installation instead of LogIn page I saw the black background with something like

    * pulse audio [ok]
    * somethingelse [ok]
    ...................................

    Which looked like xserver didn't start. Fortunately (or unfortunately) TTY 1-6 was available and I deleted the driver within
    Code:
    bender@vaio:~$ sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
    bender@vaio:~$ sudo apt-get remove -purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx
    Some errors appeared during the last step and computer rebooted by itself - everything worked (i.e. system was returned to its previous condition)!!!

    Then I decided to try installation again but installer dialog says that part of ATI driver still exist and I need to remove it first. So I repeated
    Code:
     bender@vaio:~$ sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
     bender@vaio:~$ sudo apt-get remove -purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx
    But after reboot system showed me LogIn Page. I typed user-name and password -> but system showed me the login dialog again. If I'm trying to type it again it blink and show it again for me (looks like X falls down but I'm not sure).
    TTY 1-6 still available for use. Startx command in TTY 1 gives
    Code:
    bender@vaio:~$ startx
    Fatal server error:
    Server is already active for display 0
    .........
    Also I tried to build package in TTY 1

    Code:
    bender@vaio:~$sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/oneiric
    "Which gave an error"
    ........
    Unable to resolve dh-modaliasses execstack. Please manually install and try again
    .........
    make: *** [binary-arch] Error 127
    dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules binary gave error exit status 2
    So, could anybody help me? I have two main questions:
    1) How to fix this Login Failure (which is probably X server trouble)
    2) How finally install Catalyst

    Thanks in advance

    don't know what you've done and how to reverse it.

    you should know that the x-swat ppa contains the latest nvidia and ati video drivers, therefore it's not recommended to install them manually.

    This could be related to my problem:

    Perhaps try QIII's magic code?
