Brother MFC495CW Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax Driver Install
I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 & I'm having problems installing the drivers for my Brother MFC496CW. I've downloaded the printer & scanner/scan-key tool drivers from: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com.../en/index.html
I followed the instructions @ the link on the same page, except I right-clicked on the DL'd files & opened/installed via the Ubuntu Software Center, instead of installing thru Terminal as directed. The printer functions perfectly, but the scanner doesn't. When attempting to scan, it says "Connecting to Computer," sits a while, then goes into standby mode.
The instructions ( http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...ion_scn1a.html ) are a little confusing (I'm pretty new to Ubuntu!) & I'm a bit unsure on more than a few things. Also, when I went to install in Software Center, it came back w/a message saying: "The package is of bad quality. The installation of a package which violates the quality standards isn't allowed. This could cause serious problems on your computer..." etc. I clicked "Ignore & Install Anyway" & all seems fine, but is this a warning to be heeded? Does anyone know of an alternative/better driver for my situation? Also, if anyone knows of a good site to refer to about some basic Linux terms to use in the Terminal command line, e.g. how to change directories, etc. I'd really appreciate it! I'm a whole-hearted "convert" to Ubuntu/Linux from Windows/MS-DOS- hence the head-scratching, I suppose!
I'd really appreciate any advice/pointers that I can get!
Thanks a bunch!!!
