Figured it out. It didn't work with a GUI, but by opening a terminal and using the rm command sorted it.

Have a look at Ardour. It can take a while to figure out jack, which is needed to make it run, but is a very good and easy to use program once you get it working.

You could convert your files with FFmpeg or probably WinFF which has a graphical interface, using the FFmpeg libraries.
