I'm finding xfce to be a good replacement to gnome3/unity. Much closer to gnome2.

[ubuntu] Re: ffmpeg troubles in Lucid

I guess that is the great dilema of stable versus newest in an OS. The way I get around that is to have a multi-boot system and also use virtual machines as well.

I have installed on my computer...

[ubuntu] Re: Do all video editors in Linux suck?

No! Not all video editors in Linux Suck. You need to ask yourself two questions. First what level of video editing do I require, then secondly, what is my skill base for editing video.

    If you...

[SOLVED] Re: Jack (through QjackCtl) not working

The one input only thing, maybe hardware related. I use a Lexicon Omega as my audio interface. When I use it on a mackbook, running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, I can only get I think two inputs, recognised...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: please can any one recommend an audio midi interface for use with ubuntu 11.10?

Not sure exactly what you mean by audio midi interface, but on 10.04 Lucid I use an Omega Lexicon for audio and midi input/output and a Behringer BCF2000 as a midi controller. Both work well on...

[ubuntu] Re: ffmpeg troubles in Lucid

If it were me trying to do this, I would be inclined to install fresh copy of Lucid in a VirtualBox, and experiment on how to do this in there.

I suspect that adding all the newer versions of...

[all variants] Re: How to play .264 files

Have you got the codecs to play h264 files?

You probably need libx264. then I would be inclined to use KDEnlive to convert the file to something that your system is already comfortable with,...

Re: How many of you completely switched to Linux?

My understanding, though I am open to being corrected, is that all versions of Ubuntu are based on Debian testing. The primary difference between LTS versions and the others, is the time they are...

Re: How many of you completely switched to Linux?

Yes I can read, can you? I did not say anything about it being version 2.7.

I'm sorry if what I wrote offended your senses with my previous reply. I don't use Python, so don't know what is...

Re: How many of you completely switched to Linux?

I'm not sure. I also use 10.04LTS as my primary operating system, but am also using Debian Squeeze, as my understanding is that Debian is generally much longer between cycles than Ubuntu. Squeeze is...

A good comparable alternative to Photoshop is GIMP. If you find the interface difficult because it is different to Photoshop, I believe GIMPshop should be familiar to use.

  22. [SOLVED] Re: Nautilus freezes when I interact with the desktop

Figured it out. It didn't work with a GUI, but by opening a terminal and using the rm command sorted it.

    $ rm /home/stuart/Pictures/file.gif

or where ever your offending file happens to be.

Re: How many of you completely switched to Linux?

Have a look at Ardour. It can take a while to figure out jack, which is needed to make it run, but is a very good and easy to use program once you get it working.
