After uninstalling the packages and observing no improvement after restart I attempted to boot from the Ubuntu 12.04 CD. From which the wireless originally worked.

Still no wireless. On install from the Ubuntu CD it worked out of the box, I just had to give the credentials. After that it continued to work until these updates.
