    Sounds like a plan :)

    The stuff about having separate partitions for / /home and a vfat one for data would still apply on a separate drive, if you wanted to do it that way.

    Booting from a usb-connected hard drive has some unexpected effects. Unfortunately, I don't remember for sure what they were. I think maybe that the USB-HD is first in the boot order, but Windows...
