Important to know! Thanks!
I turned off backports and the problem still exists.
Anyway, I've reported a bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1813626
and referenced this discussion in the bug...
Thanks for trying, 1fallen!
Anybody else out there who knows about the GUI? Should I post a bug and, if so, where?
Thanks in advance!
Here are the outputs of the commands you suggested:
username@computer:~$ xprop | awk '($1=="_NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL)") {print $3}' | xargs ps h -o cmd
/usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/update-manager...
"Now click on a running instance of the GUI (Software updater)."
Click where? Anywhere in the window? On a particular button?
The GUI Update Manager keeps asking for a partial upgrade. This started happening recently. sudo apt-get update and upgrade yields:
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done...
OK I'm back and I can now do sftp again. I am now waiting to see if our sysadmin is still complaining about netbios traffic. I will give this a couple of days and if I don't hear from him I will...
Thanks again. I will try this and report back with results.
Thanks Morbius1! I intend to apt-get install ubuntu-desktop using the -d option, unplug the network cable and then run apt-get install again to complete the installation. After I do this, I expect...
Hello,
I have a linux box connected to our company network. The network sysadmin (he's a Windows guy) has been complaining to me that my computer has been sending netbios packets which he claims...
I also noticed this in one of the plugin directories:
ls -al /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/
total 188
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-03-17 17:39 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2011-04-17...
So, it looks like we might have a permissions problem.
To me, Linux permissions have always been a royal pain in the you-know-what.
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 2012-03-17 17:02...
OK but I will post my results anyway.
For one thing, I could not create the links in two of the three places you mentioned without running them under sudo.
But then, when I run Firefox, it...
OK bye for now (back shortly)
Should the ln commands going in /usr/lib/... be under sudo?
Here are the results of the "java -version" and "update-alternatives --config java" commands:
result of java -version:
java version "1.5.0"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.4.3
Copyright (C)...
OK but, when I enter the command "java -version", I get the same version that is listed when I enter the command "update-alternatives --config java". Will that be a problem?
What about update-alternatives?
Here is the script file.
Sorry, had to step a way for a few minutes.
I will do the above and get back to you shortly.
My desktop is back to normal: I brought up the system->preferences->appearance applet and suddenly, I am back to normal again. Whew!
In addition, I repeated the update-alternatives --config java and here is the output:
There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java).
Selection Path ...
Hi Cherz,
So, I opened synaptic and searched for "java" in the name only. I then found a package called "java-common" and selected that for removal. A bunch of other packages got selected as...
Thanks Cherz,
I will decline the suggestion to install Opera for the time being; to me, that just seems to be yet another variable to worry about. I would like to keep things as simple as...
Hi dino99,
Thanks for the suggestion. I have thought of that but that is advised against in the howto
So, after I remove everything, should I install openJDK before re-installing the Oracle...
