OK, solved. It appears I was a bit trigger happy in posting. That'll teach me :)
For anyone else who might have the problem, change the chipset settings in Virtualbox to ICH9, and enable IO APIC.

OK, I enabled virtualization in BIOS and now I'm getting a different error message:

I'm trying to install WIn7 on a virtual box, and I'm getting the error in the screen capture below. It's my first attempt and I don't really know what I'm doing! Is it a problem with my CPU not being...
Brilliant, thanks. Just what I was after.
I need to extract the mp3 files from a few speeches/talks recorded in mp4. I've tried this method, which initially seemed to work until I tried playing the files back and they wouldn't play. I have...
So if I changed the 2nd 0 to 1 on sda3 (my home partition), it would be checked on startup?
OK, thanks, that's what I thought. I was struggling to set file permissions for a folder and found that two other users I'd created were in my own user group so they were getting the same permissions...
When you create a new user on a system, which groups on the system are they automatically assigned to?
I used useradd <username>, then passwd <username>. I moved the user into a group I created called MyAdmin. The tutorial I was following said the /home directory would be created by default, but I...
I created a new standard user account and all appears well until I tried to log in with it. On the login screen it appears OK, prompts for password and then doesn't do anything when I hit enter. NO...
I've got my Ubuntu system set up and running pretty much how I want it. Can I create an installation disk of my current setup, preferably on SD? Or does it have to be a fresh install then a back up...
Brilliant thanks, just done another partition like that, worked first time :)
In the fstab UUID line, what do the 'default' and '0' and '2' signify exactly?
So with that in mind, if I want to create any personal partitions for other users, I can just create a mount point under the username and they'll be unaccessible to all other users?
Thanks Morbius, worked a treat :)
Hi yancek, Yes the file system is ext4. This is what I added to fstab:
Sorry, local users. I edited fstab to mount it permanently/on startup.
I've created a partition called 'Shared'. I have no permissions on it as yet and want to set it so all users can read/write to it as they wish, but don't really know where to start. I tried chmod...
Hi, I've got Ubuntu up and running and would like to install a second distro. Can I create another partition with my home directory (and any others I should move with it?) in and then share it...
That all sounds like a good idea for starters.
I've finally taken the leap and got rid of Windows completely. I've enjoy using Ubuntu and have got it all set up as I want, replaced most of my WIndows programs with open source equivalents, found...
True the dock launcher isn't new, but I don' think it was an accident that it reappeared when it did in Ubuntu. It may not have been designed solely for touchscreens but it lends itself to them quite...
OK, 'with a passion' might be a bit strong, but it's more or less a touchscreen ui which doesn't suit a desktop IMO - much like Windows 8.
HI, I need a video editor for movies from my Panasonic FZ45. The files are .MTS which I believe are some kind of mpeg2? I'm new to video editing and haven't got a clue where to start. Can anyone...
I hate Unity with a passion, but that's the beauty of Linux - you can just choose another desktop environment (MATE in my case), problem solved.
This never crossed my mind, although I'm not sure I will be upgrading. Microsoft's statement 'we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge'...
