I had a problem in that sudo would not work.

From a collection of other posts I did the following.

Boot in safe mode.

Open the terminal window.

Change the first line of the /etc/group...

I had the same problem.

I changed GRUB to boot kernel 2.6.24-21-generic.

The install default was kernel 2.6.27-7-generic.

This solved the problem
