But the fact that it happened while I was installing Hardy made me think it was a software issue.
I had Hardy installed(no windows) on my HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop.

I think audacity would do the job if you can succeed to record from your sound card.
It works great in windows, but in Linux, I had lots of trouble recording from my sound card with decent quality....
You can also do a quick reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Bksp if you choose to do so.
Be sure to save your data before you do this since all programs are terminated without asking.

I would always install Windows software first and then Ubuntu/any other Linux. Cos Windows wants to be the only OS on your computer.
