  1. [ubuntu_mate] Re: Problems with colours on various printers

Just in case I didn't make it clear, the colours are wildly out in the two cases I highlighted. When I say "dirty mustard" I'm talking about French Dijon mustard, not British yellow mustard!

    I...
  2. [ubuntu_mate] laptop switches off abruptly and randomly on battery power but not on mains power

I'm not sure whether this is a purely hardware issue or whether software or Linux is involved.

I have had this Toshiba Satellite C50D-A-11Q running without problems under Ubuntu 12.04 since 2013....
  3. [ubuntu_mate] Re: Problems with colours on various printers

    This thread
    https://askubuntu.com/questions/708702/canon-printer-color-printing-too-dark
suggests that the problem is with Gutenprint - (workaround is select Color Model CMYK)

    However, this...
  4. [ubuntu_mate] Problems with colours on various printers

In May I installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on my Toshiba laptop.

I installed software for my Epson Stylus SX420W with:

    GDebi epson-inkjet-printer-nx420_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb
    Run cups 2.1.3 by...
  5. Re: Using systemd (in Ubuntu Mate 16.04) to turn off Bluetooth at boot time

For the version where my service actually works, it's

    470ms bluetooth.service

Nice software that I didn't know existed. systemd-analyze plot is amazing:
    275803
  6. Re: Using systemd (in Ubuntu Mate 16.04) to turn off Bluetooth at boot time

Here is a selection of entries (those that contained the word "blue") from the syslog when I reboot the system with my service turned OFF.
Items beginning === are my comments

    === Bluetooth is...
  7. Re: Using systemd (in Ubuntu Mate 16.04) to turn off Bluetooth at boot time

By the way, it takes 25 seconds after login for the Bluetooth icon to finally fade to OFF.

I am hoping for something a bit quicker.
At least I see how they speeded up booting - looks like it...
  8. Re: Using systemd (in Ubuntu Mate 16.04) to turn off Bluetooth at boot time

Thanks. For the moment I will try and leave available the option to turn it on when needed.
  9. Using systemd (in Ubuntu Mate 16.04) to turn off Bluetooth at boot time

I saw a lot of comments suggesting that amending /etc/rc.local to turn off Bluetooth at boot time wasn't a good idea because it was being phased out.

So I thought I would try setting something up...
  10. [SOLVED] Re: Looking for hardware that supports GLSL1.30 or later

I tried it. It works and is just fast enough.

It's not as fast or smooth as the old version of Stellarium I was running on Ubuntu 12.04 on this machine.
  11. [SOLVED] Re: Looking for hardware that supports GLSL1.30 or later

OK. My main laptop is a dual core

    AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics × 2
What's my chances of running it on that?
  12. [SOLVED] Re: Looking for ppa that supports GLSL1.30 or later

I am considering installing Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on a variety of machines, so I am trying it out on an old laptop first.

This is a Gateway ML6226b with 1 MB of RAM and
    Intel® Graphics Media...
  13. [SOLVED] Re: Looking for ppa that supports GLSL1.30 or later

    And this is mine:

    $ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL"

    OpenGL version string: 1.4...
  14. [SOLVED] Looking for ppa that supports GLSL1.30 or later

I am trying to run Stellarium on Ubuntu 16.04.

But it says that it needs GLSL (GL Shading Language) 1.30 or later (and OpenGL 2.1 or later).

The standard install is no good.

    I looked at the...
  15. Re: Can I use wildcards and *.local in /etc/ssh/sshd_config?

    So, *.local didn't work

    This one did

    AllowUsers *@192.168.0.???
  16. Re: Can I use wildcards and *.local in /etc/ssh/sshd_config?

    No, that doesn't work.

    $ ssh faustino.local
    bob@faustino.local's password:
    Permission denied, please try again.
That fails from the same machine, from another machine and if I try ssh...
  17. Re: Can I use wildcards and *.local in /etc/ssh/sshd_config?

It doesn't really say much more than your example, although it implies you can use wildcards anywhere.

    In that case,

AllowUsers *@*.local should be possible. I think I will try this...
  18. Can I use wildcards and *.local in /etc/ssh/sshd_config?

I am building a local network of machines which, I hope, will all be using Zeroconf/Avahi/Bonjour.

I want only users on local machines to be able to ssh to these machines. (All users except root)....
  19. [SOLVED] Re: Lots of data arrives at my computer without me knowing where it comes from

Thanks everyone. I have had no recurrence.
  20. [SOLVED] Re: Lots of data arrives at my computer without me knowing where it comes from

Well, thanks everyone. I think it was definitely Firefox, and probably some ad server sending me gigabytes of data and then finding at the last minute that it was blocked from displaying them on the...
  21. [SOLVED] Re: Lots of data arrives at my computer without me knowing where it comes from

Yes, but as far as I could see, there was nothing going on in Firefox. I hadn't opened a new page in about five minutes; none of the tabs seemed to be revolving the reload symbol... Maybe it was ajax...
  22. [SOLVED] Re: Lots of data arrives at my computer without me knowing where it comes from

By the way, when I turn the Wifi back on again, I get a spike of data thus:

  23. [SOLVED] Re: Lots of data arrives at my computer without me knowing where it comes from

The problem recurred. Not so fast this time: often downloading at 1/2 Mbit/sec. I notice it also uploads at about 10% of the rate of the download.

    I used lsof.

    Here is output while the...
  24. [SOLVED] Re: Lots of data arrives at my computer without me knowing where it comes from

    Not torrents, I think.

Of course, it hasn't happened again (yet) now I am ready to have a look.

    Thanks.
  25. [SOLVED] Lots of data arrives at my computer without me knowing where it comes from

Sorry if this is a bit vague; I can't find any way to formulate my problem that gets useful search results.

Yesterday (twice) and today (once so far), I notice that for far longer than I would...
