    The drivers let you power down the drives after x minutes. Do you know how to do that without them? As per my stackoverflow post hdparm -S is of no use.

    Doesn't work on 12.04 64-bit 3.2.0-31-generic. Attempted both using the command with an SD insert and with the slot empty then plugging one in. No detection in either case.

    I compiled, installed then ran l.sh. During compilation I got the depmod error mentioned here but ignored it - figured you knew about it as you didn't fix it in your updated script....

    to the top and ran a

    sudo update-rc.d /etc/init.d/cardoff defaults

    This won't help OP, however it might help others. I was getting OPs error but after enabling AHCI in the BIOS (while still running the 11.10 64-bit installer with ahci=off) everything worked fine.
