I'm having the exact same trouble. Did you make any progress? It seems like it should be strait forward to set up samba to authenticate through pam exactly like the logon does.
I had this problem earlier today. It's looking for
/etc/libuser.conf
which isn't correctly created during the install.
solution is to run the following command:
sudo touch...
