Did you checked md5sum? If you did and everything is O.K. burn iso on lower possible speed. In BIOS select CD as your first boot device, and after that there is no reason not to boot in new Ubuntu.
Try to install linux-headers by typing in terminal
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
Like other say before me, I will choose 32 bit version. With 2GB there is no need for 64 bit system.
I didn´t try Ubuntu Mate, but I tried MATE and it looks good. :D

You have old comp with low ram. If you want to install Ubuntu, try Lubuntu. That way you will able to install and run Ubuntu. ;)
Of course you can dual boot Ubuntu and Elementary OS Luna.Just make partition for Elementary.You can obviously share swap and you can share home partition if user in Ubuntu does not have same name as...

That is because command sudo apt-get update just sync your repos with one on the server.After that sudo apt-get upgrade will install all updates.Reason why sudo apt-get upgrade...

autologin-guest=false
autologin-user=username

Thaat was right thing to do.Select that you will use partition as ext4 an do not format it.That way your data and files will be safe.Just to remind you; nothing is 100 % sure. ;)
