[ubuntu] Re: Can't print -- requires authentication

Thanks. Unfortunately I have no stale jobs.

However I noticed that I can't edit (save) the configuration file from the CUPS configuration pages, which is probably connected with my problem over...

[ubuntu] Re: Can't print -- requires authentication

I have tried editing "/etc/cups/printers.conf", and even setting it read only, but the file always gets rewritten to include the line:

    by something in the...

[ubuntu] Re: Can't print -- requires authentication

I have the same problem, I am running 10.10 64bit.

If I edit "/etc/cups/printers.conf" as in #9, it works for a while then the printers.conf file is automagically restored to its original state,...
  4. [all variants] Re: When to reboot server after update/upgrade?

Thanks, I am sorry to say I have never used apt-get dist-upgrade, until now. It offered to install a new kernel that was withheld when using just apt-get upgrade. Interesting, you learn something all...

Hi Dragos, what do you mean 'but before dist-upgrade' ?

  6. [all variants] When to reboot server after update/upgrade?

    Hi,

After I update the Jaunty server (headless) using apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, how do I know whether a reboot is required - is it only after a new kernel version is to be installed?
    ...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Samba suddenly will not allow access to shares

I updated my Jaunty server today. Samba shares disappeared.
The update had overwritten my smb.conf file. Nice!

Fortunately I was able to restore it from a backup.

It has proved a good idea...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Server disconnects problem - how to diagnose?

    Hi mstrap123,

Yes, I have fixed the problem, sorry I couldn't find out how to mark the thread as fixed.

It wasn't a software problem at all. My old server Pentium III hardware had some...

Thanks, but I already have tried that.

  10. [ubuntu] Re: Server disconnects problem - how to diagnose?

Ok, I've done a clean install... and I still have the problem.

I think that I'll change the router.

    [Edit]
I seem to have solved the problem by making the IP address unfixed in the router. I...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Server disconnects problem - how to diagnose?

I cleaned out the print queue (after having fixed CUPS server which wasn't talking on port 631 - something had changed the configuration file), and the FIFO stuck kernel messages have now stopped. ...
  12. [ubuntu] Re: Server disconnects problem - how to diagnose?

Thanks, I'll try this later and report back if it fixes the problem.
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Server disconnects problem - how to diagnose?

Interesting. It is a print server. There are some very old docs in a print queue for a parallel port printer that isn't currently in use. Is this a problem for the server ?

  14. [ubuntu] Re: Server disconnects problem - how to diagnose?

Looking at the daemon.log file DHCP seems to operate ok, but I've just taken a look at syslog and I am seeing the following entry every 80 sec or so:

    Feb 5 15:29:35 chef kernel: [92862.707710]...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Server disconnects problem - how to diagnose?

Thanks 'Endwin' for the pointers to the log files, I'll try to see what's going on.

I am out of the office today, and logged in using ssh for about 5hours without mishap, so that's interesting....

My server now runs 8.04 and Samba on an old PIII machine. It is an old installation, originally running Fiesty but has been upgraded over time. For some months (using Gutsy) I have experienced...

[all variants] Re: SOLUTION: Connecting to network shares

I've got the same problem, I can't get the Fstab server share to mount in Hardy.

D'oh! Fixed the problem. The error code...
  20. Re: [idea] GUI to add cifs shares to the fstab - "Map Network Folder"

I strongly agree, mounting server shares in Windows as local drives is so easy.

I am having no fun in mounting my server shares with Hardy desktop. I used to have a working Feisty system once,...

Not a problem, but this amused me. Somehow sudo had been removed from my system.

    Hi Tim,
