    Before I received your message I stumbled upon a solution.

    I installed GNOME Tweaks, then went to "Desktop" and turned off "Show icons." Only the unwanted icons disappeared....

    In Ubuntu 16.04 I wrote a script that clears the clipboard:

    chmod a+x ./ClearClip
    #!/bin/bash
    xsel -bspc
    exit


    It runs from a desktop icon and works fine.
