I used SQLlite to look at the paths for the media in both shotwell and banshee-1 and looked into the hidden dir where the dbs live, thumbs etc...

Thanks - did exactly as you suggested. One of the hard drives has failed. Curious that the 'good' hard drive was not detected with live CD running, until the bad drive was removed.
