Did that .... changed the speaker setup to a know working speaker system and viola.
Speakers were the culprit

Tried all that - redid the settings everywhich way - did the ol reboot in between several modifications to the settings, and still - I get test signal ONLY when they they are...
Sound card is a SBLive! PCI
I can get the test sounds out of the silly Logitech Easy Call Desktop Voip speaker phone thingie - not out of the soundcard and speaker set connected to it.

Have you rebooted with it yet?
Seems like most of the time all is well, until reboot ... then NetworkMisManager munges the WPA and passkey seetings - so you need to re enter them, good to go...
I fixed this nagging problem with an install of WICD
www.wicd.net [ a better interface to manage wireless than the NetworkMISManager anyway]
Took 15 minutes and a reboot for good measure nd...
If the router works under windows but not ubuntu - how is it suspect and possibly toast?
Hardware either works or it does not - its not OS discriminatory!

I used WICD software to replace network manager GUI under System | Adminstration | Network
Now it works a treat! Rebooting doesnt require resetting all my WPA2 settings and passkey phrase.
The install routine for wicd gave a message box that indicated it wanted me to approve removing NetworkMisManager ... I said yes.
Sadly NetworkManager GUI is still there.
