Most of the errors I got were related to :0 and some were related to authority issues. Running with sudo is not acceptable, so I can't get past the nonsense authority issues, and x11vnc doesn't like...
Here is a workaround which at least gets me back up and running in a degraded mode, and may help others: install fvwm and use that.
Install fvwm.
$ apt-get install fvwm
Comment out...
This does not work for my use case.
Try this: Put two systems on a network. System A is running Ubuntu 11.10 with no monitor or keyboard or mouse, System B is running anything that can run...
Here's how to tell if it's a bug. If something works before an upgrade but not after an upgrade, and there is no documentation or explanation for the change in behavior, it's a bug.
The x11vnc...
Before I moved back to Linux, I used vnc and fvwm on FreeBSD for years. I would much rather use Gnome, but I'm glad you got this far.
I was able to get that far by erasing .vnc/xstartup, running...
It's funny, but this is exactly how servers are used many, many places and have been for many, many years. ssh in, vncserver out, get your graphical interface where you need it instead of where the...
I get the same thing as antgod when I try to use vino.
Jack.
I was bit by this when I upgraded to oneiric. It "just worked" in previous versions and suddenly stopped working on this one. Unfortunately, using the xstartup supplied by this link did not work as...
I looked over the web page for remmina and installed it, but it can't be run from the command line when I log in remotely via ssh, so it's not going to solve my problem.
Any other suggestions?

I upgraded to oneiric and now vncserver does not do what I need it to do.
I have a headless system that needs to run an X11 program. What I did under lucid, maverick, and natty was ssh into that...
I'm currently doing this completely lame workaround of running eclipse from the command line after downloading it to my home directory. :-(
Jack.
Unfortunately these solutions do not work for me. I need to use ant 1.8 for one project and eclipse for another. What do I need to do to convince eclipse that the ant1.8 package complies with its...
Moderators: I was torn on whether to post this in "gaming and leisure" or "education and science". If I chose poorly, please do not hesitate to move the thread as necessary -- hopefully the forum...
I have a project http://www.mathuin.org/TopoMC/ and I'm using EC2 to generate content so my home computer isn't completely useless for a day or so at a stretch. :-)
The script I have written does...
I'm mostly satisfied with my EC2 experiences to date. However, I'm interested in learning some more about current best practices.
Ideally I'd like to start the machine up, run a job, have it push...
I just started using LastPass everywhere I can and additionally configured my Google account to use two-factor authentication. I would love to have two-factor authentication for Ubuntu (shell and...
I checked the Xorg.0.log.old and found this very interesting tidbit:
[ 12634.207] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x00003d68)
[ 12641.207] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000,...
I love playing Minecraft in full-screen except when it brings down my Ubuntu desktop.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit desktop which I update religiously. I have 4G of onboard RAM and a 3.00GHz...
I have installed Lucid Lynx more than a dozen times in the past thirty hours and I've almost got it working with RAID. The current problem is with /dev/md0 not existing when grub2 tries to access...
I am in the same boat as the author of this blog post:
http://eksfiles.net/2008/01/rigblaster-plug-play-in-ubuntu-710/
I am not able to use the workaround mentioned by the blog post author, so...
