update : i tried alsamixer c0 and increased the volume of my speaker(which was set to zero ) now everything seems to workfine except rhythmbox and the volme controll option is still missing.

i am using ubuntu 10.10 and my sound stopped woking .it had happened before and i had a vague recollection that reinstalling some thing worked so i did a

The problem of negative colors is with all the media players not just Totem.

thought using
videobalance hue=-1 ! autovideosink with custom setting also solves the problem but i am not sure whether above option is using my CPU or Graphic Card.

yes i had set it to ximagesink instead of xvimagesink but the reason i did so is that xviimagesink gives me negative colors in the videos :(
