yes ideed, it started on VLC and mplayer, then i installed ubuntu 9.04 again, with gnome desktop of course (if that's what you mean by ubuntu-desktop)..it happened again on VLC, installed kde 3...

you can find the synaptic under system -> administration -> synaptic package manager

or you can use the terminal by typing

sudo dpkg -P program_name
which will ask you for your password

just extract the file downloaded from eclipse.org, you'll find the executable file 'eclipse', click it and it will work..
