    i mainly got root:root
    some have other groups, but only the one syslog:adm that i manually changed for auth.conf

    from a glance, the other logs that mean something to me seem to be filling....

    i didnt have any entries in auth.log and realized the permission have changed somehow (how is rather mysterious to me)

    was:

    Just having the same problem, hope its a bug and not a feature from the producer of the last entry

    neither getting ssh logins nor anacron job or other sudo uses

    sshd_config has

    You should have all permissions on your home folder,
    how about the USB-drive, what are the permissions there?
    (although they shouldn't be restricted...)

    the / just comes from the unix directory seperation as in home/user/Desktop

    theres also a second advantage...

    maybe have a go at an older distro and then upgrade.
    maybe using an usb to not waste cds.

    when you boot with the cd it should give you options like "Install" or "Try ubuntu without changin anything on your computer". The latter is the famous LiveCD.

    Maybe give it a try just to see it...

    The 32bit install should work fine on a 64 bit computer. Sounds more like a grafics problem.

    very belated afterthought:
    you could change the BIOS to only boot from CD and not the harddrive. This still enables you to access the HD from within the livecd.

    i vaguelly remember having to disable journaling in HFS+ in order to access the drive for writing. I think thats the only way to do it but i let you google that yourself.
