i would suggest that you should install wvdial and its dependent packages and edit the /rtc/wvdial.conf file so as to enter your uname and passwd,and after then it will work fine by just running sudo...

i suggest you to run requirement tests on RAM for lighter distros especially lubuntu...........:D
it maye be due to the following 2 reasons:
1.corrupted download of iso file.
2.or any problems during making of bootable usb i.e copying the files to the usb...........hope this helps.
