  1. Re: how to mount 2 partitions to 1 directory

    Note that you can make an array of disks a.k.a. JBOD using LVM or mergerfs. That way it would be possible to effectively mount multiple disks on one mount point. Some googling will get you going.
  2. [SOLVED] Re: How to run a script at logout? (for cleaning no-longer-used mountpoint dirs)

    Note that someone could simply ‘pull the plug’ without logging out. So a cleanup script also has to run at login. It is usually easiest to forget about the logout case and only run it at...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Can't link to files in /usr/bin, but can copy

    A hardlink is just another name for the same file. It cannot work across different partitions/file systems. Technically, it could work on multiple disks if the disks form an array, with one file...
  4. [SOLVED] Re: Screen Sharing and screen recording problem on Ubuntu 21.04 (wayland)

    Hmm, when programmers look at a complex wheel and think they can quickly make a much simpler and better one, they invariably invent a triangular wheel, followed by a square wheel... Wayland is now...

    Re: Can't initialize Maildir

    You can see which user postfix is running as, with the ps or top commands.
    $ sudo ps -e | grep postfix

    Re: Can't initialize Maildir

    Well, this is the error to solve: "ls: cannot access 'home / mailNDO / Maildir'

    The 'ls' command probably runs as the postfix user, so either that directory does not exist at all, or the postfix...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Need to access ubuntu remotely - installed but no access to display

    On most UNIXes:
    $ sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config

    If you have a directory there, see what is in it:
    $ sudo ls /etc/ssh/sshd_config

    then edit whatever you found:
    $ sudo vi...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Is Samba read/write rate performance on Ubuntu 20.04 capped at around 11MB/s?

    IMHO if you need hundreds of iptables rules, then you are doing it wrong.

    Regarding Email Spam, years ago I noticed that the faster my server, the more spam I get. I then added a 1 second delay...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Is Samba read/write rate performance on Ubuntu 20.04 capped at around 11MB/s?

    With iptables, deny everything, then allow the two or three ports that you need to have. That's it.
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Serial port interrupt conflict suspected

    I would run 'top' and see what is going on with the processes, then loop the serial port back tx to rx and see how it goes in the simplest case.

    BTW, my favourite serial port program is 'cutecom',...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Need to access ubuntu remotely - installed but no access to display

    You probably only need one of SSH, RDP or VNC and can do anything with SSH, so get that to work first.

    RDP and VNC are MS Windows compatibility things which are not needed when working with...
  12. Re: Port 25 blocked, need to get postfix to use 587

    The best source for information is the Postfix web site:

    [ubuntu] Re: Compressed Folder?

    Hmm, some points to ponder:
    a. NFS mount a remote share.
    b. A tmpfs RAM disk.
    c. Create a small swap file and put btrfs on the previous swap partition.
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Is Samba read/write rate performance on Ubuntu 20.04 capped at around 11MB/s?

    What kind of ethernet switch do you have between the hosts? Try iperf with a straight wire connection, no ethernet switch.

    You should also look at the data packets with tcpdump, since that way,...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Is Samba read/write rate performance on Ubuntu 20.04 capped at around 11MB/s?

    Check the ethernet configuration with ethtool to see whether it is indeed in Gigabit full duplex mode.

  16. Re: Why is Ubuntu so slow compared to Win 10 on my laptop?

    Hmmm, with those specs it should work fine, being similar to my old and trusty Macbook Pro. I think that you have a bad video device driver. My way to fix that, is to install ffmpeg and check the...
  17. [SOLVED] Re: Gparted shows empty partitions and then pc won't boot

    I would not use a special gparted DVD, since it may be hopelessly out of date and may not work with new hardware. The Ubuntu install media contains gparted, so you should try the latest Ubuntu...
  18. [SOLVED] Re: Gow do you cd into a directory with multiple word name?

    As shown above already, quotes and tab are your friend.
  19. [ubuntu] Re: I got hacked twice on Ubuntu 18.04, don't want third time

    A server should also use some kind of mandatory access control - Tomoyo, SELinux or AppArmor. If you want to know what is happening, send the log files to a different machine and sit and watch them...

    Re: Deleted Extended Partition 2

    Since you just did the install, I take it that there is nothing important on the machines yet, so reinstalling will be very much quicker than fixing the problem. You posted the question 2 hours ago,...
  21. [SOLVED] Re: How to make X11 requests from remote (ssh -X) apps only show remote windows?

    "ssh -X flipped the notion of client/server." No, X and SSH don't really flip anything. The X server serves up the machine screen, keyboard and mouse and makes them available to clients who want to...
  22. [SOLVED] Re: How to make remote Plank over SSH only show remote applications?

    “1) How can a remote application run over ssh -X even know about local windows?“ It doesn’t. SSH forwards the X requests from the remote to the local machine. The local X server handles the windows....
  23. [SOLVED] Re: How to make remote Plank over SSH only show remote applications?

    Exactly. There is no need for the extra timber. One can either launch remote applications directly from the remote ssh shell, or run a remote file browser and use that to run the remote...
  24. [SOLVED] Re: How to make remote Plank over SSH only show remote applications?

    Well, I have been using Linux since about 1996 and I have never before heard of Remote Plank. It is quite possible that nobody else here, has either and you are on your own. Try to find the...
  25. [ubuntu] Re: Bad Sectors - CAN NOT save the data on the HDD

    I've had a SSD fail after 2 weeks. Since it was a brand new machine, I hadn't made any backups yet. Grrr...

    The new SSD is now 12 years old and I have a versioned backup system.

    So, losing...
