  1. [ubuntu] Re: Huge memory footprint with 2.6.31-15 kernel and virtual box kernel module enabled

Lol. you're right - I meant XP, and was just looking at "used Mem" - doh :\

I suppose my memory usage will be quite different to the OP, as I have KDE & amd64.

    Anyway, removing preload made my...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Huge memory footprint with 2.6.31-15 kernel and virtual box kernel module enabled

UPDATE: I've removed "preload", and after a few reboots I get a more satisfactory:

  4. [ubuntu] Re: I would like to try Ubuntu, but i have no idea about partitions

The x64 version (amd64) is great. Haven't had any problems with it.

From memory (!), you'll need 2 partitions somewhere - one for ubuntu and one for the swap partition. But because a disc can only...

[ubuntu] Re: Small Complaint regarding Ubuntu.

Found it quite easily, but I haven't tried it:

I used ISORecorder x64 when I last used Windows to burn, but that was many many months ago.

I use OGG out of principle.

My Windows/Linux music players support it, and my portable player supports it.

Poll: Re: do you leave your computer on 24/7?

I always turn it OFF - because if left on:

any power outage will affect it, unless a UPS is used.

    [ubuntu] Re: Still undecided

I recommend dual-boot, and then you can use the best software under Windows *and* Linux.

You don't have to "commit" completely to either - it isn't marriage for life ;)

    Use the software that...

[SOLVED] Re: How to Normalize mp3s

Thanks for the guide - it pointed me in the right direction. By the way, the script was already correct (fixed) under my Karmic 9.10 installation.

I also looked at using the Audacity application...

  11. [all variants] Re: Increase mousepoll when gaming under Karmic 9.10

I think I've got the solution to persisting the value of 2 after reboot. You just need to edit the /etc/modules file, and add the following section:

    After a reboot, doing "cat...
  12. [all variants] Re: Increase mousepoll when gaming under Karmic 9.10

    I've also tried this:

After that, the /sys/module/usbhid/parameters/mousepoll file does contain 2, but I'm still not sure how to verify it is definitely set.

    Anyone ?
  13. [all variants] Re: Increase mousepoll when gaming under Karmic 9.10

Thanks - I've done that and rebooted, but I'm not sure how to confirm it's definitely set.

I can try playing UT2004 and checking if it seems more responsive, but that...
  14. [all variants] Increase mousepoll when gaming under Karmic 9.10

I've got a Logitech G5, and I'm trying to increasing the mouse poll rate. I can:

    sudo nano /sys/module/usbhid/parameters/mousepoll
and change it to "2" - then unplug and replug the mouse.

  15. Re: C# ( Mono ) compiler gave me .exe .. I'm confused.

You should be able to run it on Windows, but the required .NET framework may need to be installed under Windows first. Look in the Control Panel's "Add/Remove Programs" applet, for "Microsoft .NET...

    [ubuntu] Re: Karmic boot issue..

Mine did that too, but I don't remember seeing it since I applied all the software updates that are now available.

I didn't think of it as a security problem anyway, just a visual issue.
  17. [kubuntu] Re: Kubuntu Karmic more stable than Kubuntu Jaunty?

  22. Re: Putting the bad press about Karmic in perspective

Changing the mixer rate helped me too, thanks.

I also found that maxing-out these [mixer] values helped a bit more:

  25. Re: UT2004 on Karmic 9.10 x64 - need libopenal.so.0 file

Also (!) I've now found that it's OK to link it to /usr/lib/libopenal.so.1 instead of /usr/lib/libopenal.so.0. Otherwise the sound doesn't sync properly.

I've amended the original post (again).
