Now VLC works, with a couple big annoyances:

    1) in File Manager, when I right click on a mp4 file, VLC is not listed, and the search does...

Thanks guys. I have always used Radeons before when I needed a video card, but in light of your comments, I am leaning toward the Nvidia 1060.

    [ubuntu] Nvidia or AMD?

I have little experience with Ubuntu, beyond the GUI.

    Re: Erased or Formatted Drive

I guess my present problem is that the drive is not recognized, as a secondary drive.
I did not install an OS, so of course it is not recognized as a primary drive.

Will the tools above find it?

    Re: Erased or Formatted Drive

I had three physical drives in the computer -- a primary, a working secondary and a new tertiary.
When formatting the new drive, Gparted ALSO made the secondary inaccessible, or formatted it.

    Erased or Formatted Drive

I had a primary Ubuntu drive and a secondary data drive.
I used GParted to format a third drive, which it did, BUT the second drive was evidently erased.
How can the lost files on the erased drive...

    Shut Down command causes reboot

When I Shut Down, the system always reboots.

    This problem is pervasive.
It occurs it on two different computers (different motherboard, CPU, SSD, etc.) on 14.04. Both have ASRock Z87 boards.
