    It's a new OS for you so you need to learn. You'll learn just the same way you learned Windows, by using the OS.

    e2fsck -b 32768 /dev/whatever


    The superblock is very important and there are multiple copies across the drive

    Its the same OS underneath, just a different default desktop interface. The underlying kernel, services and so on are 100% different.

    It's like changing the wallpaper on a Windows system then...

    Sure. Ubuntu doesn't care. Just remember to write GRUB to the USB stick and it can boot wherever you plug it in and tell the BIOS to boot USB first
