    You do not "need" to run any of these over a base (Gnome or KDE) Desktop environment.

    If it is a true Desktop Environment ... like Xfce. Xfce was made to be a stand-alone desktop.

    The new Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 already has the "usb_modeswitch" application, pre-installed by default.

    I have both the A600 and just got the new UM-185C ... works like a charm....
