    Thanks for your help! Turns out that there were several problems with the xorg.conf -- Not only were there two devices (as you noted), but there were also two monitors and two screens specified....

    R (a statistical software package) can do hierarchical clustering and plot dendrograms, using hclust and plclust. See http://www.r-project.org, or you can probably get it through Synaptic.
