XFCE is old looking? It is a very classical one. And probably with the highest usability. By the way Google is using xmonad.
After 6 years with Ubuntu (Gnome DE) we migrated all our machines to Xubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (Xfce Desktop Environment). There is no single reason to look back at Gnome. Thank you, Xubuntu and Xfce teams!

Xubuntu is probably the best distro at the moment. Avoid Linux Mint Xfce (and similar), it is a waste of time.
