Re: how to password protect a folder????

Cant you just gpg encrypt a folder on the command line? No need to install a bunch of extra packages.

    [ubuntu_mate] Re: rdiff-backup include/exclude-list

The file could be anywhere actually -- just give the full path to the file --- /home/john/dir1/dir2/excludes.txt (just an example).

Re: ubuntu 20.04 LTS stability on release?

If you aren't really into running the latest and greatest, a general rule of thumb is to wait until after the first LTS point release prior to upgrading. Usually al lot of bugs have been worked out...
  4. [all variants] Re: How to create a backup in github that i can run in any ubuntu

    @napa2

You mean like keep a list of installed packages with apt? This has been discussed here many times I believe -- just have to search for it.

    Xcp-ng hypervisor release version 8.1

  7. [SOLVED] Re: What is the each command's different merit between su and sudo?

    doug@s15:~/sudo/test$ printf '%s ' *.txt | xargs --max-procs=6 --max-args=1000 sudo rm

Seems like a lot of extra overhead here -- honestly it just seems easier to become the root user and and do...

    Re: chown command

To my knowledge chown can not create a new group.
  9. [SOLVED] Re: What is the each command's different merit between su and sudo?

    @TheFu

    Agreed. No more hijacking.
  10. [SOLVED] Re: What is the each command's different merit between su and sudo?

There are many ways to skin the cat. I just don't like the --forced option due to the lack of the root user. How backups are performed is kind of redirecting the argument here.
  11. [SOLVED] Re: What is the each command's different merit between su and sudo?

Well that's just ducky. Using the --force option isn't ideal since its possible to overwrite things without warning.

Is it possible to activate the su user on Ubuntu? I know there are security...

    Re: EndeavourOS-Easy Arch!

The "Arch community" isn't bad per se -- they just want to be asked beginner questions -- which many would call stupid. I agree the attitude can be caustic however in general most of the beginner...
  13. [SOLVED] Re: What is the each command's different merit between su and sudo?

My only take on the matter is I once found a problem when working with acme.sh when install let's encrypt certificates. The process would work when run under the su user. With sudo -- the process...

    Re: EndeavourOS-Easy Arch!

I'm not trying to be an elitist but installing Arch itself -- from scratch -- isn't that difficult. Yes the first time through you may need to know your system hardware, but it honestly doesn't take...
  15. Re: I don't know what DoH (DNS over HTTPS) is and if I should enable it?

I have no idea what any DNS provider does with their data in terms of monetization of other nefarious activities. I'm using Cloudflare. I run a bunch of server with Lets Encrypt Certs. ...

Re: Using Virtualbox for web browsing

Define "increased security" since that is rather a vague term given all the potential security threats in your current model. I believe others have elucidated to this fact all ready.
  17. Re: I don't know what DoH (DNS over HTTPS) is and if I should enable it?

Hmm, I've never heard of dns.adguard.com. I took a look at their website. I'm not saying its sketchy - however when companies are giving away products for free it's my belief they have to be...

    [SOLVED] Re: Systemd Container Problems

Hi - I don't have a lot of knowledge of what you are trying to do. Are you trying to containerize the trusty-server? Could you not just use a docker image for a container?
  19. Re: I don't know what DoH (DNS over HTTPS) is and if I should enable it?

Honestly -- I think DOH is a tool that should be ran at the router level and not the individual application level. I've had DOH setup on my pfSense router now for a couple of years. I have much...

Re: Ubuntu DNS for Home Network

I'm not sure you can modify the /etc/hosts file on an ipad unless you unlock it. Your choice for name resolution are going to be either at the individual host level - /etc/hosts or by running a dns...
