  1. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

The persistent live system uses an overlay method, so that you need not worry about where to put the updates. When you install or update something in the normal root partition (for example in /bin,...
  2. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

Yes, I can manage this iso file dated 2020-02-22 with mkusb. I can make a persisstent live drive, that boots both in EFI mode and BIOS mode. I use the default settings in mkusb. This makes a GUID...
  3. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

I think it should make no difference.
  4. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

    @TheFu, Interesting :-)

Do you know how to create a TCZ package, and would you help explaining? Or even better, would you have time to do it?
  5. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

I think it is good way, quite simple, and the iso file works well. The 'only' problem (at least with 16.04.6) is that we don't know any way to create a persistent live drive with the system in the...
  6. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

I had to check with yesterday's daily iso file of Ubuntu Focal Fossa.

It works in UEFI mode, when extracted from the iso file (with rsync) to a FAT32 partition. I did nothing extra (no flags etc)....
  7. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

In 16.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS I think Lubuntu is slightly lighter. In Focal to become the next LTS release there is not much difference.

The problem with your current iso file to make a...
  8. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

    Thanks for telling us, @oldfred.

Is this bug only affecting Focal so far?

The extraction method was good and has worked for years. Let us add heat to the bug report and push for a bug-fix so...
  9. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

Thanks for the PM with details to give me an opportunity to get your files and try to make a persistent live drive.

    - I cloned from the iso file to a USB pendrive. It works for me both in UEFI...
  10. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

How detailed help do you need? If you upload your tool (22 MB) or your system image with the tool (550 MB) somewhere, I can download it, try to use it and maybe I can suggest some improvement, maybe...
  11. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

Yes, this is very similar to the image files, that I created a few years ago with mkusb installed according to this link
  12. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

Are you asking how you should do it and how to make it easy for a beginner with Linux? Or how to explain for a beginner how to do it?

With Ubuntu and the Ubuntu family flavours of version 19.10...
  13. Re: Weird behaviour of USB storage media when dual booting?

Yes, Windows does not like that any other operating system is touching 'its' file systems.
  14. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

Yes, for new Linux user it might be easier to just have them download a new iso when there's an update and burn it to a USB.

But for slightly more experienced users with a slow or expensive...
  15. Re: How do I deploy an iso with persistence built in?

Maybe you can use a new feature or Ubuntu 19.10 and newer versions (and if you want a light-weight system, suitable for a USB pendrive, Lubuntu or Xubuntu), that makes it easier to create a...
  16. [SOLVED] Re: Abiword saves .odt files with extra blank pages.

In the developeing release, Focal Fossa to become Lubuntu 20.04 LTS, they are abandoning Abiword and start to provide LibreOffice. The reason is what you are talking about, the lack of maintenance of...
  17. [lubuntu] Re: USB hard drive not recognized in Lubuntu.

Are you willing to try some command lines in a terminal window? In that case I can suggest that you start with

    lsusb

    and

    sudo lsblk -f
  18. Re: For how long are you using your External HDD ? Which brand is it ?

Are you still cloning with 'dd' without a safety belt? ;-)
  19. Re: For how long are you using your External HDD ? Which brand is it ?

A 32GB USB pendrive is not very reliable. This type of product is mass-produced and is subject to wear and corruption. It is more likely to fail without warning compared to other alternatives.

    I...
  20. Re: For how long are you using your External HDD ? Which brand is it ?

    +1

I use eSATA (and USB 3) external enclosures (boxes) and put high quality 'internal' 3,5 inch HDD drives into them. Lifetime as well as speed is so much better than with the cheap alternatives...

Re: Howto make USB boot drives

Rufus 3.9 can make good persistent live drives of Ubuntu 19.10 and newer versions

Rufus is a well-known tool that can use this new feature in Ubuntu 19.10. Be sure to use Rufus 3.9 or a newer...
  22. [all variants] Re: Retro Encrypting Ubuntu Live Persistent USB Casper Partition

    I agree with C.S.Cameron,

There is no good way to encrypt a persistent live drive. You had better create an installed system using LVM with LUKS encryption (when installing to the USB pendrive)...
  23. Re: help creating a usb stick to run Ubuntu

Please tell us about the computer - brand name and model
and also about the graphics chip/card - brand name and model

It will be easier for us to give good advice, when we about the hardware....
  24. Re: USB drive boots from one machine, but not others (grub installed)

Are you booting in UEFI mode or the old BIOS mode (alias CSM alias legacy mode)? What you tried should work in BIOS mode, but it is more tricky in UEFI mode.

In UEFI mode the problem can be...
  25. [SOLVED] Re: Is there some way of using free space on installation thumb drives for other file

    mkusb version 12, mkusb-dus

Standard mkusb, version 12 alias mkusb-dus can make persistent USB boot drives from iso files of all current versions of Ubuntu and the Ubuntu family flavours as well...
