[ubuntu] Re: Icewm won't run after a logout

I see you figured it out yourself :) Now to figure out why! Well it's apparently because Gnome runs a session manager, and so icewm-session won't run after that.

[ubuntu] Re: IceWM is not working

Well Icewm works for me in Maverick...but not in Natty. Reportedly Icewmbg crashes the x server. I dunno. Bugs have been filed but it seems they are not a priority, or maybe the problem is being...

[ubuntu] Re: Icewm won't run after a logout

I have since discovered that it will run, IF you change the desktop file to exec icewm, not icewm-session. But then you lose all xsessions abilities, such as running a startup file to start other...

[ubuntu] Icewm won't run after a logout

Running an up-to-date Ubuntu Natty - IceWm will run IF I go into it from GDM after a reboot. If I logout and try to go back into Ice it simply returns to the GDM prompt. I have checked all the logs...

    Re: Dumping Natty

In this context it means I was planning to replace Natty with something else.....Among the other distros I run is Maverick...which the last time I checked is also Ubuntu.

    The plan to replace Natty...

    Re: Dumping Natty

I ran NVidia a few years back but got sick and tired of the hassles every time the kernel updated.

Some say Radeon is a good card for Linux...others disagree and say ATI...I guess you pick one and...

That's nice. But you've missed the point completely.

    Re: Dumping Natty

When a decision is made to drop the Gnome3 desktop (even before it's released) and replace it with Unity, I would describe that as a "direction".

    Re: Dumping Natty

Intel 865B - It seems a new Intel-video pops up everyday, but so far each one seems to be worse than the previous one! Or maybe they are not-so-subtle suggestions to get another video card;)

    Re: Dumping Natty

We'll see if it settles down...or whether the developers have bitten off more than they can chew. I know one thing. I would not want to be in their shoes. There has already been enough critical...

    Re: Dumping Natty

Well all I can say is what I said before:
it seems Ubuntu is moving in a direction which will require powerful up-to-date hardware. Fine if that is what you have, but those those who don't have it...

Yes, it seems those issues are the biggest..along with some python issues. I can run a plain vanilla desktop...but nothing else. Unity is a complete washout. Compiz crashes every few seconds. But...

Yeah, I also think the developers are being pressed for time because of Unity and other major changes...so they can't spend time and energy supporting things like older video, older network cards,...

Bugs I can deal with, but when developers email me to say they don't plan to fix any more bugs in the Intel-Video drivers, I think it's time to quit. It was suggested I deal with upstream. Guess I...

    Dumping Natty

[ubuntu] [SOLVED}Re: Window manager gone missing

Well the visual effects were already set to none, but you were right, the window manager was still set to Compiz in gconf. Changed it to metacity and the fix was instant.
