If using Firefox, have you tried turning off the hardware acceleration feature?

You can do the copy part using Nautilus File Manager from within ubuntu.
To add Nautilus to your top panel right click on a blank bit and select "Add to Panel", then select "Custom Application...
Have you checked your screen saver options?

Those beep codes can mean different things to different bios so it might suggest a problem with your memory modules.

You can try something like:
cd `locate filename`
The problem is you would only cd to the first folder it finds containing the filename and that may not be the folder you're looking for.
Look for a hidden file in your home directory called .gimp-2.4. There is a brushes folder there and that's where I would copy the files.
