You could try installing-backports-modules... Choose the one that says generic.
That works after a restart, for a while then it quites.
Wish I could help you. I have the same problem with Xubuntu 8.10 on my new Toshiba L300 Laptop... The closest I got was installing wireless drivers, which got it working, though a little slowish....
That did not help. I cannot understand why it would. I tried it twice, however and it makes my system unbootable.

Sorry, when I typed in ifconfig, I was plugged into a ethernet cable, I just hooked up wireless internet, unplugged the ethernet cable and I got different results.

I've never had a problem with Xubuntu 8.04... Maybe I will install that and once internet is working, I can upgrade the OS, as I did with my older laptop.
