you could try installing Ubuntu restricted extras from the software-center. Or try using Mozilla Firefox?
On compiz-config-manager (CCSM) go to prefrences, then click "reset to defaults"
Just install ubuntu restricted extras from the software center, should have all the stuff you needfor java and other general things.
Also chromium/Google Chrome comes with java built in i believe
go onto additional drivers and enable any which are available?
Thanks, that's seemed to sort out the software-center.
Much appreciated :)
I tried them and noticed no difference :/

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install wine

if you go to www.google.com/chrome you can download google chrome for ubuntu.
It's the same as Windows, if anything faster on ubuntu.
You can use Google chrome if you want on linux. Just visit the chrome website.
Also what internet adapter do you have?
Downloading applications from the internet isn't always a good idea, unless it's from a trusted source so google, opera, sourceforge, gnome-look.org
Just use the software centre for applications?
install programs from the software center?
If for some reason you don't have it type
apt-get install software-center
If you put Ubuntu on a PS3 then the PS3 becomes a computer (just a really powerfull one) So it won't be able to play PS3 games or use any of the PS3 features
Also It depends what you want, If you want a more classic Linux use Mint. If you want a more original linux which is more compatible use Ubuntu
