Re: Keep away massive SSH login attempts

I know (1) and (2). Frankly I'm not worried about (3). Someone would have to develop a zero-day attack against OpenVPN and pick my machine out of the millions that are using it. I don't find any of...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: How to create snapshot (iso) of current running system to be installed in others

I've cloned the drives of both my laptops using ddrescue ("sudo apt install gddrescue"). I connected a blank SSD drive of equivalent size to the machine with a USB/SATA converter, then ran ddrescue. ...

Re: Keep away massive SSH login attempts

It makes the remote machines extensions of my local network. An attacker could only access the remotes if she broke into my local network. I also use non-standard ports for OpenVPN. Someone trying...

That just shows the definitions that WP uses to connect to the database. I'm talking about the steps to create the database with the mysql client as described in...

Re: Keep away massive SSH login attempts

None of my servers have a publicly-visible SSH port. I connect to them via static tunnels using OpenVPN.

If you only have to connect from one place this is an easy option.

[ubuntu] Re: Removing of watermarks in pdf

Have you tried opening the PDF in the GIMP ("GNU Image Manipulation Program")? It imports a PDF as a set of layers. I don't know anything about the watermarking technology, but maybe it's just a...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Error 24 : Write error : cannot write compressed block

Is /boot on a separate partition? Are you short of free space?

Ubuntu is supposed to leave just two sets of kernel files when updating, but that doesn't always seem to work completely, and...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Error 24 : Write error : cannot write compressed block

There are a couple of possible reasons:

    1) You don't have permissions to write into /boot. Did you run the updater as root with sudo? Is /boot and all the files it contains owned by root?

    2) ...

    Re: Apache2

"Enabling" a web site in Ubuntu (using the command a2ensite) creates a "symbolic link" in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled that points to the corresponding file in /etc/apache2/sites-available. Here is the...
  12. Re: Router's Samba server all of a sudden works in 20.04; what happened?

SMB/CIFS can use a variety of protocols. Perhaps the router is now using one compatible with the Samba client.

[ubuntu] Re: Firefox can't stream videos?!

    What version of Ubuntu?

I haven't had a problem playing videos from Netflix or Crunchy for years.

  16. [server] Re: dhcp bind9 gateway server broken after upgrading to 20.04LTS

You can add the clients to /etc/hosts on the server for backuppc.

    192.168.2.1 myserver
    192.168.2.101 client1 [alias1] [alias2]
    192.168.2.102 client2
    [etc.]

    This works if the server...
  17. [server] Re: dhcp bind9 gateway server broken after upgrading to 20.04LTS

You specify the DNS servers that the clients should use in dhcpd.conf. Is there a reason you're running your own copy of BIND9? Unless you have your own domain and need to manage its zone files, I...

I have a number of wireless Logitech mice, though not the model you specify. (Mine are M310s or equivalents.) They all use a wireless dongle and require no software. In fact I can use the mouse even...
  19. Re: Access a 10.0.0.x network computer from 192.168.1.x

The likely problem is that the ISP router doesn't know what to do with packets for 10/8 addresses. You would need to modify that router's set up and add a "static route" to the 10/8 network....
  20. [server] Re: Time to build a server with old hardware.

Try to mount the share manually with

    sudo mount -v bigbin-xubuntu:/Vol10 /Vol10
The "-v" switch means "verbose." You may see where the problem lies.

Sorry I missed the absent colon in my...
  21. [server] Re: dhcp bind9 gateway server broken after upgrading to 20.04LTS

  22. [server] Re: Time to build a server with old hardware.

I wouldn't bother with "proto=tcp" in the /etc/fstab entry. I've used the default UDP on all my servers, and they work just fine. It also has slightly better performance than using TCP which...
  23. [xubuntu] Re: Advice needed for purchase of a headset and mouse

My (adult) daughter is a pretty avid gamer and only uses wired keyboards and mice to avoid lag.
  24. [server] Re: Time to build a server with old hardware.

As TheFu says, you're mixing up the entries in the file /etc/exports on the server (which look like the line above), and the entries in /etc/fstab which have a different syntax.

    I always use...
