  1. [xubuntu] Re: Mouse wheel stuck controlling volume, can't scroll pages

    OK, a few things:

    1. My first search was evidently not thorough enough. Embarrassing.

    2. I put this thread in the wrong place.

    3. This solved it:...
  2. [xubuntu] Re: Mouse wheel stuck controlling volume, can't scroll pages

I've installed GNOME and tried it too, and this problem also affects me there. Not sure if I can alter the thread title prefix accordingly.
  3. [xubuntu] Mouse wheel stuck controlling volume, can't scroll pages

    Hi,

I've just installed Xubuntu 10.10 on my new computer. The only problem is that I can't get my mouse wheel (USB wireless) to act normally. It's stuck on controlling the audio volume. I think...

Stephen Fry uses Ubuntu... who knew?

Did everyone already know this? Anyway, I get excited when I discover unsuspected famous Linux users.

    He's upgrading to Oneiric this...

Re: What is the name of your computer(s)?

Those are references to the Book of the New Sun (and the 'coda' to the tetralogy, the Urth of the New Sun). I'm halfway through the Book of the Long Sun now... thoroughly recommend!

    Oldish laptop: tzadkiel
    New netbook: triskele

Google will tell you one of my favourite authors. ;)

    If/when I get myself a desktop, it'll be autarch.
  7. Re: Accounts

    Hmm, fair enough.

I don't foresee myself getting profile-editing permissions back anytime. I only hang around in the Cafe really so don't get many beans, I'm not at all experienced so I'm no use...

    Re: barebones laptops

Similar thing for people in the UK: http://pcspecialist.co.uk

I got my netbook from them, and lovely it is too. Dropping Windows saved me ~£70, which I used to choose an SSD instead of HDD. :)
  9. Re: Share your favorite optimistic background!

One of my favourites. An extension, spotted on the walls of a water utility company's offices -- Half full? Half empty? Twice the necessary size? Does it even need to be glass?

    Re: Do's and don't

My guess is it's because the two models work on exactly the same driver, I have the same kinda situation with my printer.

    Re: Do's and don't

I can happily state that I have a lovely Epson printer which works flawlessly with Ubuntu. AFAIK printer compatibility is a matter of check-before-you-shop regarding Linux -- annoying when you learn...
  13. Re: Will Ubuntu be the first distro to eliminate the command line?

I fail to see how you're backing up the position that it should therefore be removed. Losing the command-line is a loss of functionality, not progress!
  14. Re: Will Ubuntu be the first distro to eliminate the command line?

I've also been using Ubuntu for almost a year now, and I'm very happy that the command-line is there. I don't think it will ever go away, it's far too useful.

Also, when looking for a fix for a...

I can't comment authoritatively on whether PHP is the best way to do what you want, though I suspect it is. But I can tell you that W3Schools does a very good tutorial to learn PHP:...
  16. Re: How would I (in effect) "dual-boot" ubuntu & lubuntu?

Thanks for all the info g/g/o*!

I'll probably do what hhh and FuturePilot suggested, I've given it a go on my current computer and am now writing this from the lubuntu desktop. :) Nice and simple....
  17. How would I (in effect) "dual-boot" ubuntu & lubuntu?

    Hi all,

This might be a stupid question (but I'd rather ask it anyway!)

I'm just getting a new netbook, and when considering what to put on it, I thought since I like 'standard' ubuntu for all...

    Poll: Re: Do you smoke?

    +1

I'm lucky in that no one in my family (at least in the last 3 generations) smoked. I do hold my breath when passing smokers on the street, and/or cross to the other side! Blech.

    Good luck to...
  19. Re: Quantum computers now commercially available! (Yes, really)

I know a postdoc who's working on quantum computing at Oxford, and I was under the impression that they're currently struggling to make even a 4-qubit computer work, and even then not in any way...

Re: He/She pronoun usage issues on forums

Erm, I would go ahead and say "they". I believe some people have made up some alternatives such as "ve"... but I find that a bit odd, though I'd use it if someone asked me to.

Re: He/She pronoun usage issues on forums

Using slightly fewer characters, there's always "s/he", fairly easy to type. Which covers most situations, except for the rare possibility that they're gender-neutral...!

    Re: Senior prank ideas?

    That's a good one.

A non-techy proposal: get 3 sheep/goats, and spraypaint the numbers "1", "3" and "4" on them. Release them to roam the school, and laugh as the management tries to find number...
