Update: Found my problem. it was mixing a USB keyboard with a 4 year old...

I like when others have my problem. Same laptop. Same problem. If I use ifconfig -a it doesn't even list my adapter. My 'puter doesn't even know it exists.

dstew - I think it's basically the same direction you were going....
I'm glad to find others with the same problem as me.
When I try to start SPM using the menu, a panel item comes up saying "Starting Administrat..." for about 10 seconds or so, then goes away...
