Re: Black square around the screen

    Welcome.

"Resolution is on max" (whatever you mean by this) doesn't mean it is the correct native resolution for your monitor.
  2. Re: broke boot manager trying to install, now always boots straight to windows 10

    1. A separated /home is optional; it has some advantages but not really better than a separated partition for your data (personal files). Again, it must be stressed, it's OPTIONAL, and has nothing to...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: 18.04: Flashing Line At Bottom Of Screen

I can't picture what you're describing but certainly it has something to do with graphics and drivers.

If Wayland works for you there's no reason not to use it. It will likely became the default...
  4. Re: Ubuntu freezes when opening Google Chrome.

    Welcome.

You didn't provide any hardware information, namely graphics card (integrated, discrete or hybrid) so it's anyone's guess. Also no information about your Ubuntu version/release/flavor,...
  5. Re: Poor performance with acer laptop (intel i5, gtx950m)

It would be interesting to know exactly HOW did you manage to try all the drivers... Anyway, even if you currently have a proper Nvidia driver installed (very unlikely) and yet you didn't disable...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Dual booting with Windows 8.1 on Toshiba Satellite C55-A

Have you changed the UEFI > Boot settings to boot "Ubuntu" instead of "Windows bootloader Manager"? Not that it matters now that you removed Windows. Is there something else you need help with?

Re: Unofficial repos for new software?

Yes, there are PPAs that offer some newer versions. What do you need specifically?
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Dual booting with Windows 8.1 on Toshiba Satellite C55-A

    Welcome.

Please feel free to describe the problem/question, etc.
  10. Re: Forgot password, trying to set a new one

Upgrading an EoL release isn't worth the time and effort even if you knew the password...
If you can autologin somehow as you say, just backup your personal files and install a supported release...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: I want to buy a new computer for Ubuntu (Beginner)

    Welcome.

A lot to unpack for a first post...

Good news is that if you avoid the very cheap very entry-level Intel BayTrail and CherryTail class (if they're still around) and go just one tier...

[SOLVED] Re: Installing Ubuntu ISO by commands

Vendors support the preinstalled OS only in consumer products. Dell doesn't support Windows in the Developer Editions (Ubuntu) either.

No, they didn't. What made you think that?

    Are you...

    [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade warning

Those partial upgrades should be avoided indeed. Almost always it's a symptom of an APT problem.

In those situations (had only two, I think, in many years) I did it in terminal with the usual...
  14. Re: Can't install Ubunut or Try it without installing

With NVME drives Legacy is NOT even an option.
  15. Re: Can't install Ubunut or Try it without installing

    Could be...
From the beginning: You have UEFI, you don't have BIOS. Legacy or CSM is what "emulates" the old BIOS. However, Legacy mode is not an option for you considering the hardware.
    So, it...
  16. Re: HDMI not working in Ubuntu when directly connected, but works with a USB C dock

You can install it now then keep it updated.
  17. Re: snap-confine has elevated permissions and is not confined but should be. Refusing

You can have a full install in an USB drive. Not the same thing as a live version with or without persistence and, of course, much less "portable". Live media is not to be used as a daily driver.

    Re: Downgrading

    No, it isn't.
If you want 16.04, install 16.04. A mistake, obviously, because it has only about one year left of support and really there's no point in using old releases.
    Better to post about the...

Not sure how it works, whether that folder is part of a standard installation or created on demand... If this is a new installation that never booted then maybe the folder doesn't exist? Really,...

    Re: constant cups/printing issues

I thought you're asking about CUPS because you had to use/configure the printer there. But now you say "click and print"?
Normal users actually want exactly that and it should be easy,...
  22. Re: Mounting external hard drive(mint) as root to windows host

.gnupg is an hidden folder, hence the period.
If ext2fs supports and respects this attributes it should keep the folder hidden also in Windows explorer. Not sure it works but perhaps you should try...

    Re: Asus GX502GW

They do say that but it's across the board. Vendors support only the preinstalled OS in the consumer products. Servers have a list of supported OSes, mostly Linux.
