Hi,
thought I would load 17.10 onto my machine to see how things are going, and in general its OK. I have an annoying problem though. This happens when I am moving browser windows between workspaces...

This website seems to be looking at the same issue, I could not see if they had actually resolved it.

I am getting exactly the same problem but I am running an nvidea GPU.
Just bought a new PC it has a disk with windows 8 installed. I put a second disk (SSD) in for 14.10. I have been selecting them by choosing the boot device (F12). Great - however when 14.10 installed...
Thanks for that - I've updated grub to see how it goes. First impressions are that the graphics are a bit quicker - so fingers crossed.

Is this a known problem, is anyone else suffering.
This appears to be a driver (Radeon) problem as I can boot through recovery and using the vesa driver I am able to login. Now I need to get the Radeon driver back up and running properly.
I have just updated my saucy installation. I am getting to what appears to be the login screen but get no login prompt, just a white ubuntu logo. The drumroll happens and I can get to the terminal...
This morning I was notified of an update by the software updater - which I opened up to agree to. However the window showing what was to be installed was empty. I went to exit the application and...
Note that its running as a thin client - presumably against a windows machine somewhere else - or Citrix.... or similar.
This type of problem is normally caused by differences in the path setup.
Running it locally will be setting up a different set of default paths, its worth investigating.
If you have an ATI card this worked for me.

None of this seems to work for me :-(
What graphics card have you got. I have an ATI card and have the same problem. There appears to be an issue with the FGLRX drivers which does not seem to be well publicized. I am not sure where to go...
Can see this being very useful in Tablets and Netbooks as well, I guess the Battery Usage would fall much lower, perhaps using very little RAM at all.

As said before, the equation is:
who is going to profit from it and is it going to be worth the high cost of recovering the data.
Yeah, both crashed for me as well, had to install 11.10 and do an updgrade from there.
Just boot into the liveCD, and once you have it running the desktop will have an icon to install Ubuntu. Choose the 'use entire disk' option. That will wipe the existing data and installations and...
These sort of statements always annoy me, they are actually ill considered and wrong. The mixing up of the command line and a search term has been used against Unity and the HUD for some time.

You could try
unity --reset
and I think there is a switch in myunity to return compiz to default (but not sure on that).
Sounds like its your graphics drivers. Check to see if the third party software app is asking you to install a graphics driver.
What graphics card have you got?
