Have you try to install new 3.2 kernel? I handle Nvidia driver better. Best should be with 12.04 arrival, video card I have GeForce 9400M handled easy (no crashes)

Are you able to boot from this disk? There will be boot menu, you can choose try Ubuntu. By doing so you'll load OS then with desktop up and running check propritary drivers then you can continue...
