Setting a channel in Qsynth worked for me too.
Double click channel in Qsynth, choose one at random,
make sure VKMP on the same channel, Sweet.

Actually the Ubuntu Certified Harware list includes a lot of antique computers and inaccurate in at least two cases.
The only computer available in Australia with ubuntu pre-loaded is the Dell 2110...

Acer aspire one D260
using lspci most devices show up as N10/ICH7 on this motherboard
mic works well in recorder and cheese but not skype.
I tried the alsa GUI but this did not help
