    Re: Will using iptables secure Ubuntu?

    If you were to run a command like

    /sbin/iptables -A INPUT ...
    after those other rules are in place, that command will fail because the "-A INPUT -j DROP" command will precede it. Without that...

    Look at the file $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts on your client machine and and delete the line(s) that refer to the FTP server. Then try reconnecting again.

    [ubuntu] Re: Video editing advice

    I started using KDEnlive a few weeks back to add titles and captions to some captured Zoom sessions. It didn't take me long to figure out how to do so.

    KDEnlive is from the KDE project, which...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Brother Laser Printer HL-L2340DW, wifi

    Good. You should be able to make it the default by using the administrative tools available through the web interface.

    If you have problems finding a driver, you should run the Brother Install...

    Point a browser on the Linux client to the address http://localhost:631/. What does the "add a printer" routine show?

    [server] Re: wifi on ubuntu server 20.04

    I really think you should use an Ethernet cable. Just put the server next to your router and connect them. Once it's up you're going to be connecting to it over SSH anyway.

    Production servers...
  11. Re: how do i create a booatable windows 10 installation media with a pendrive in ubun

    See if usb-creator-gtk (or usb-creator-kde if you're on that desktop) works. I think I used Rufus on Windows to make mine, but I don't recall at the moment.
  12. [ubuntu] Re: ubuntu server failed to start network time syncronisation

    If you have no network interfaces, that's the problem, and it's much bigger than just time sync.

    18.04 uses netplan, not /etc/network/interfaces, to activate interfaces and assign them IP...

    Re: Will using iptables secure Ubuntu?

    First, about the localhost address. Yes, I forgot to exempt it in the rules above. It's easier to write a rule that exempts the "lo" interface like this:

    /sbin/iptables -P INPUT -j DROP...

    Re: Will using iptables secure Ubuntu?

    First, out of the box, Ubuntu has no services that listen on ports. So it's largely invulnerable to most attacks.

    Does the machine present a publicly-visible interface? Does anyone other than...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Brother Laser Printer HL-L2340DW, wifi

    I strongly suggest hard wiring the printer to your router with an Ethernet cable. Then give it a static IP address within your network subnet.

    Re: php failure: Text File Busy

    Make sure you have the opening and closing PHP tags in your script. It should look like this:

    #!/usr/bin/php
    <?php
    PHP code here
    ?>
  17. Re: Which would be the best domain name?

    I'd start by searching in the .com and .net domains myself. Like TheFu says, top-level domains like .systems raise suspicions.

    There aren't many options in .com, but I did find that...
