Solved. I had pandas 0.7 installed (the latest version in the Ubuntu repository). Uninstalling that and manually installing the latest pandas (0.10) fixed this issue and another one I was having.

Here is a running example:

Got me squared away again.

I get the black screen with an error message when resuming my Gazelle from sleeping with the lid closed too.

I just rub my finger on the touchpad and wait 10-15 seconds and the GUI screen comes...

Ok, fixed that problem too.

/etc/X11/default-display-manager

had lightdm instead of /usr/sbin/lightdm
