In order to address a problem with ROS, I uninstalled pyassimp via
sudo dpkg --remove --force-depends python-pyassimp
and installed it with pip using
sudo pip install pyassimp
As suddenly as this problem started, it has gone away. Here's the output you requested.
matt@BESTLenovo:~$ sudo lshw -C disk

After changing the system setting to require login at startup this is not an issue. Marked as solved.
Two days ago I was using abcde to rip CDs on a laptop running 16.04. After a few discs I selected the system setting to "Do nothing" when a music CD is inserted. Yesterday when I went to rip some...
This problem has the following acceptable solution: if I disable "Automatic Login," so that my password is required at startup, there is no longer a problem with my keyboard shortcuts being active! ...
I've added a few keyboard shortcuts, some via the Keyboard application and some via compizconfig-settings-manager. When I power on the computer they do not work. Logging out and logging back in is...
There are a few keyboard shortcuts I have set up in 16.04 and upon powering up the computer they only work after logging out and back in. That is, every time I start up the computer I have to log...
This is a non-issue since I found the button for illumination. It would be nice to know why it is on by default now, but since I can easily turn it off I'll close this thread.
Thanks for the link, @mook765!
The keyboard illumination is also puzzling.
This morning Ubuntu showed me a pop-up window that stated a security update was available for my hardware. At least that's my recollection of what it said. I installed the updates and now the...
Thanks for your time.
I think I will just start with an Ubuntu LAN server and see if that gets me all the functionality I want (except for web-page hosting).
I don't imagine that any...
If I abandoned the idea of hosting web pages could I forsake all the security habits he mentions? All I would use the server for would be local storage and streaming plus maybe setting up a VPN and...
Thanks a lot for the information! It seems to me that I have nowhere near the time required for proficiency in setting up and maintaining a Linux server. (My plan is to just use FreeNAS instead.)
Would help me start off in the right direction to set up a server? My background is that I've used Ubuntu Desktop for a few years, occasionally coming to this forum for help, but have 0.0 units of...
Are you instructing me to set the router to only use Channel 11 (this is, I think, the only thing I can find about channels on the router settings page) or are you saying I need to get my computer on...
I can get to the router settings but don't know how to change frequencies or even see a list of frequencies. It seems like I'll need to be on WiFi to perform this step. Is that correct?
Thanks, Hadaka. Here is the script's output.
Note: some lingo might be misused in this post. I've been working to improve WiFi performance on an Acer laptop that has Broadcom hardware. It seems to need the b43 driver. (The PC used...
sudo apt full-upgrade
Upgrades all installed packages except add the "smart upgrade" checkbox. It tells APT to use "smart" conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most...
Update: The computer will boot with an old kernel version (3.13.0-35). Versions 36 and 37 do not work, though. (Nor does 61 as seen below.) So what now, try to fix the problems using the working...
That did it. Thank you both very much. I knew I was butchering the terms --- the Alt+Tab functionality is Application Switcher or Static Application Switcher, one. And grahammechanical thanks for...
I like the classic Gnome interface better than Unity, but what I like most of all is my Compiz effects that I was using in 12.04. The ones I most cherished were Negative and Grid. It seems that...
My HP LaserJet Professional p1606dn was not working reliably until I installed the new version of HPLIP from the HP website. However, before upgrading HPLIP the printer would print two sided (when I...
